(2008 Atwater campaign mailer)

The bill Republican Jeff Atwater refers to would amount to a tax-payer giveaway purchasing worthless depleted land from Big Sugar at a premium to its current appraised value.

Recently, Republican Jeff Atwater tried to pull a fast one by quoting the Miami Herald in one of their mailers.

The mail piece makes two tantalizing charges:

“Democrats want to raise taxes.”
and
“Other Democratic Plans include raising sales taxes”
(2008 Atwater campaign mailer, citing The Miami Herald 3/8/2008)

The quotations referred to are completely misleading and selectively edited.  Linda Bird and Senate Democrats want to close GOP supported loopholes on select groups who pay NO TAXES.

The full quotations are:

To Republicans, that means Democrats want to raise taxes

Other Democratic plans include raising state sales taxes on those who don't pay them -- whether it's on ostrich feed or newspaper ads…

The RPOF (Republican Party of Florida) who paid for the Atwater Ad received over $1.3 Million from Big Insurance, and Republican Jeff Atwater has received over $91,000 for this election cycle from Big Insurance interests.
